Below Lucas Group Military answers some of the questions asked of our Military Transition Recruiters by Transitioning Military Servicemembers:
At what point in my military career should I contact Lucas Group?:
Everyone who is on active duty will, at some point, make a transition. It may be a transition to some other type of government employment, or a transition into corporate America. We have some veterans contact us once they have made the decision to leave and some who contact us years before they make the transition. Generally speaking, the sooner you reach out to us, the better. We can keep you plugged into the marketplace so you will have a better feel for what your options are once you leave active duty and can help you use the time before your transition to prepare yourself.
Should I leave the military?:
Leaving active duty military service is a highly personal decision that each individual must make for themselves. Most of us in Lucas Group's Military Transition Division are veterans, so Lucas Group Military understands what our candidates are going through. Serving in the military is an honorable thing to do and rewarding experience. There are things in the military that you will never be able to find in the private sector, some for better and some for worse. We do not engage a candidate in the interview process until that candidate has made the decision to leave active duty. We will not entice people to leave military service. Rather, Lucas Group Military serves as a gateway to corporate opportunities for those who have served honorably and have decided to move on.
What can I do to prepare for the transition?:
Read books, business periodicals, surf the web, talk to friends, classmates, relatives and others in the corporate world to learn about the different opportunities that might interest you. If you have a partially finished undergraduate degree, masters degree or other certification in areas of interest to you, complete it. Use some of leave time to visit friends, classmates, relatives and people they may refer you to at their place of business to learn more about what they do. DO NOT buy a house in the place you think you want to live. This will significantly narrow down the opportunities that you can consider. Save your leave so that you have it available to do interviews as you approach your date of separation (DOS). As you prepare to begin interviewing, coordinate with your supervisor and co-workers to ensure you are carrying more than your fair share of the workload so they will help you when you need time off to interview. Be open to as many opportunities, industries and locations as possible. You will learn a lot in the transition process and you will change you mind about things that you thought you were sure about going into it.
What does Lucas Group need from me in order to begin working with me?:
Your Lucas Group Recruiter will need your last 3-4 military evaluations, your college transcripts (as applicable) and a "Lucas Group Application," which your recruiter will send you to fill out. Once we have received and reviewed these documents, we will determine if we are able to help you in your transition.
When will I start Interviewing with companies?:
Once the candidate is between 60-90 days from their date of separation (DOS), we will begin the matching process and will start setting up interviews and/or inviting candidates to attend one of our Military Hiring Conferences.
How does the process work? / How does Lucas Group determine which companies I will be presented to?:
Your Lucas Recruiter will review your background, experience and performance (per the documents you sent in) and will give you a "marketability assessment" to let you know what you should expect in your transition. Every candidate is unique, but given our experience in the marketplace we can give each candidate an idea as to the types of opportunities they might be a fit for, the compensation level they can expect and locations that are hot, warm or cold in terms of hiring activity. We will then work with each candidate to develop a transition plan based upon their career parameters and qualifications and the timing of their transition. We present job opportunities to candidates on behalf of our corporate clients and present candidates to our corporate clients on behalf of the candidates once we have confirmed that they are qualified for the position and are interested in pursuing it. In most cases we will present a candidate with multiple opportunities with several corporations. We offer advice and counsel throughout the interview process right through the offer stage. We even stay in touch with you once you start your career as part of our retention program.
What kind of jobs am I a fit for?:
Your career path is determined by two major factors, both of which change over time.
(1) Your qualifications and experience (degree, certifications and work experience); and
(2) Your career parameters (where you want to live, what you want to do and how much you want/need to make). Our Salary Survey can be found at (LINK TOP SALARY SURVEY).
